Technical Symbols Guide
Unicode's Miscellaneous Technical block contains symbols from computing, electronics, and engineering, including keyboard keys, optical character recognition characters, and control picture symbols. This guide catalogs the most useful technical Unicode characters with their code points and context.
Technical symbols occupy a fascinating corner of Unicode, reflecting decades of engineering standards, computing history, and international notation systems. The Miscellaneous Technical block (U+2300–U+23FF) contains nearly 256 characters used in disciplines ranging from computing and telecommunications to dentistry and optics.
Overview of the Miscellaneous Technical Block
The Miscellaneous Technical block was designed to house symbols that did not fit neatly into other Unicode categories. It draws from ISO standards, industrial notation, and established computing environments. Many of the glyphs here were already in wide use on physical keyboards, engineering manuals, and specialized software before Unicode standardized them.
| Range | Description |
|---|---|
| U+2300–U+232F | General technical symbols |
| U+2330–U+237F | Optical and measurement symbols |
| U+2380–U+23FF | Keyboard, power, and APL symbols |
Keyboard Modifier Symbols
Some of the most recognizable characters in this block are the modifier key symbols used primarily on Apple hardware documentation and software interfaces:
| Symbol | Code Point | Name |
|---|---|---|
| ⌘ | U+2318 | PLACE OF INTEREST SIGN (Command) |
| ⌥ | U+2325 | OPTION KEY |
| ⇧ | U+21E7 | UPWARDS WHITE ARROW (Shift) |
| ⌃ | U+2303 | UP ARROWHEAD (Control) |
| ⎋ | U+238B | BROKEN CIRCLE WITH NORTHWEST ARROW (Escape) |
| ⌫ | U+232B | ERASE TO THE LEFT (Backspace/Delete) |
| ⏎ | U+23CE | RETURN SYMBOL |
| ⏏ | U+23CF | EJECT SYMBOL |
The Command symbol (⌘ U+2318) has a rich history — it originates from Scandinavian road signs denoting a point of interest (a campsite or attraction). Apple designer Susan Kare adopted it for the Mac keyboard in 1984 because it was visually distinct and had no strong prior meaning in English-speaking contexts.
Power Symbols
The IEC 60417 standard defines symbols for power states, several of which were added to Unicode in the Miscellaneous Technical block and later in the Supplemental Symbols and Pictographs block:
| Symbol | Code Point | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ⏻ | U+23FB | POWER SYMBOL (toggle power) |
| ⏼ | U+23FC | POWER ON-OFF SYMBOL |
| ⏽ | U+23FD | POWER ON SYMBOL |
| ⭘ | U+2B58 | HEAVY CIRCLE (standby) |
| ⏾ | U+23FE | POWER SLEEP SYMBOL |
These symbols were added to Unicode in 2015 following a campaign by the Open Source Hardware community, who needed to render IEC power icons in software without resorting to images. The IEC 60417-5009 standard (power toggle) is the iconic circle-with-line symbol seen on virtually every electronic device.
APL Symbols
APL (A Programming Language), created by Kenneth Iverson in the 1960s, relies on a unique symbolic notation that required its own keyboard layout. Unicode preserves a large set of APL symbols in the technical block:
| Symbol | Code Point | APL Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ⌹ | U+2339 | APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL QUAD DIVIDE |
| ⌺ | U+233A | APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL QUAD DIAMOND |
| ⍺ | U+237A | APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL ALPHA |
| ⍵ | U+2375 | APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL OMEGA |
| ⍳ | U+2373 | APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL IOTA |
| ⌽ | U+233D | APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL CIRCLE STILE (rotate) |
| ⍴ | U+2374 | APL FUNCTIONAL SYMBOL RHO (reshape) |
APL's influence extends to modern array-oriented languages like J, K, and Q, and to certain operations in numpy and pandas that inherited APL's conceptual model of operating on entire arrays rather than looping over individual elements.
Dental and Optical Symbols
The technical block includes specialized notation for fields not commonly associated with Unicode:
- U+232A (⟩) and U+2329 (⟨) are angle brackets used in quantum mechanics (bra-ket notation)
- U+2315 (⌕) TELEPHONE RECORDER appears in telecommunications engineering
- U+2302 (⌂) HOUSE is used in computing as a home directory indicator
- U+2316 (⌖) POSITION INDICATOR is used in technical drawings
ISO 7000 Symbols
ISO 7000 is the international standard for graphical symbols used on equipment. Unicode has encoded many of these, including safety, control, and status indicators used on industrial machinery, consumer electronics, and automotive dashboards. When implementing technical documentation, using the correct Unicode code point rather than a raster image ensures the symbol scales correctly and remains accessible to screen readers.
Using Technical Symbols in Code
In HTML, you can reference these symbols by decimal or hex entity:
# Command symbol: ⌘ or ⌘
# Eject symbol: ⏏ or ⏏
# Return symbol: ⏎ or ⏎
In CSS content properties or JavaScript strings, use the escaped form:
# const cmdSymbol = '\\u2318'; // ⌘
# const returnKey = '\\u23CE'; // ⏎
When building keyboard shortcut displays in web interfaces, these symbols are far preferable to text abbreviations like "Cmd" or "Ctrl" — they are internationally understood and require no translation.
